Academy Awards, Oscar voor Beste Film en Beste Regisseur
Naar jaarlijkse traditie worden in februari de Oscars of Academy Awards uitgereikt in Hollywood. De prijzen worden georganiseerd sinds 1928 en door de filmgeschiedenis heen zijn steeds meer categorieën toegevoegd. De voornaamste Oscars zijn deze van Beste Acteur en Beste Actrice en voor Beste Film en Beste Regisseur. De eerste Academy Awards werden uitgereikt op 16 mei 1929, tijdens een privé-brunch in het Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, waar zo'n 270 mensen op waren uitgenodigd. Voor films of acteerprestaties uit de periode 1927-1928 werden vijftien prijzen uitgereikt. De winnaars van de eerste Oscars werden al drie maanden voor de plechtigheid bekend gemaakt. In 1930 werden de winnaars pas aan de vooravond van het event prijsgegeven aan de pers. Sinds 1941 worden enkel de genomineerden bekend gemaakt, pas op de gala-avond zelf worden de winnaars onthuld. Tot 1935 konden film uit de twee voorafgaande kalenderjaren in aanmerking komen, sindsdien enkel films uit het voorafgaande kalenderjaar...Opmerkelijke winnaars
- De jongste winnaar was Shirley Temple. Als kindster won zij in 1934 als zesjarige de eerste Juvenile Award
- Deze films wonnen elk elf Oscars en zijn daarmee recordhouder: Ben-Hur (1959), Titanic (1997) en The Return of the King (2003)
- Walt Disney is met 28 gewone en 6 speciale Oscars de meest gelauwerde Hollywoodster uit de geschiedenis
- Componist John Williams voert de lijst van nominaties aan met 43 stuks. Hij won uiteindelijk 'maar' 5 Oscars
- De jongste winnaar in een gewone categorie was Tatum O'Neal. Zij was 10 jaar in 1973 toen zij een Oscar won voor haar rol in Paper Moon
- De oudste winnaar was Christopher Plummer. Hij was 82 jaar toen hij in 2012 de Oscar voor Beste Mannelijke Bijrol kreeg
