Op 25 maart 1991 werden de Academy Awards (uitreiking van de Oscars) voor het jaar 1990 gehouden in het Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. De gastheer/presentator van de avond was acteur/filmregisseur en producent Billy Crystal (zijn 2e keer). Hij won 2 Emmy's voor het schrijven en het hosten van de Academy Awards van het jaar 1990. Iets wat hij later nog een keer zou gaan herhalen. Billy Crystal werd in die tijd gezien als de grappigste man van Amerika.
