Op 30 maart 1992 werden de Academy Awards (uitreiking van de Oscars) voor het jaar 1991 gehouden in het Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in Los Angeles. De gastheer/presentator van de avond was acteur/filmregisseur en producent Billy Crystal (3e keer), die bekend is van vele films, series en zelfs een aantal kinderboeken schreef. Voor het hosten van deze Academy Awards van 1991 ontving hij zelfs nog een Emmy. Dit kwam door grappen die gedurende de show maakte die gerelateerd waren aan de film City Slickers, waar hij ook een rol in had. Bij de opkomst deed hij ook nog een hele leuke Hannibal Lector na.De grote winnaars
De grote winnaar van de avond was de film The silence of the lambs die van de 7 nominaties 5 Oscars won voor o.a. beste film, beste regisseur en beste acteur en actrice. Anthony Hopkins en Jodie Foster wonnen de catogorie.Memorabele momenten
