Op 24 maart 2002 werden de Academy Awards (uitreiking van de Oscars) voor het jaar 2001 gehouden in het Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. De gastvrouw/presentatrice van de avond was actrice/komiek Whoopi Goldberg, die bekend is van vele films en televisieseries. Zelf was zij 2 keer genomineerd (voor de films Color purple en Ghost) voor een Oscar en won ze 1 keer voor beste vrouwelijke bijrol in de film 'Ghost'. Tevens ontving zij wel meer dan 35 andere filmprijzen, waaronder een Emmy-award, een Golden Globe award, een Bafta award en 2 keer een American comedy award.De grote winnaars
