Op 26 februari 2012 werden de Academy Awards (uitreiking van de Oscars) voor het jaar 2011 gehouden in het Hollywood and highland centre. De gastheer van die avond was niemand minder dan Billy Crystal. Deze acteur, schrijver, producer en komiek is vooral bekend van zijn films als When Harry met Sally en City Slickers. Hij was voor de 9e keer gastheer van de Oscar uitreikingen. Het lijkt veel, maar de Amerikaan Bob Hope staat op 18 keer. Eigenlijk zou Eddie Murphy de gastheer zijn, maar die haakte af, omdat de producer ook wegging.De grote winnaars
De grote winnaar van de avond was The artist met 5 Academy awards. De film Hugo had ook 5 Oscars, maar in minder belangrijke categorieën. Jean Dujardin was de beste acteur en Meryl Streep de beste actrice. Andere films die goed scoorde waren The iron lady en The help.Memorabele momenten
